URBAN TAUNTON....again....RUNNIN' ON EMPTY

Taunton, Massachusetts 24 June 2009

As I mentioned in my last post, I had decided to take-up where I'd left off on my previous foray and quest to achieve New Bedford as a destination. Seems I can barely get past Taunton. That place is a gold mine of images for me. And "foray" is the proper term -- according to dictionary.com it means to raid and plunder. That's kinda' my approach to photographing -- quietly marauding and collecting photographic treasures I find.

Frank,

I've been looking through your URBAN images and find the entropy depicted engaging and depressing at the same time. It's easy to see how transient everything is here. Especially the architecture.

I start thinking about summers spent with my mother and grandfather in Germany as a kid and how impressive things were in the little villages in Bavaria. Lot's of old buildings. Or at least built with the thought that they would be around for 500 years. And still look good.

We have a lot of similar decay as you are seeing. Some of the stuff built here looks bad after 20 years, even if maintained and in use. Seems to say something about our thoughts on building.

Transient is a good term, seems the longer I live the more transient thing become. And that's why I've always thought of these images as cultural artifacts, sadly "modern cultural artifacts." That was the term Walker Evans used when he picked up a discarded Bud can on the side of the road during his visit to CenTex back in '73. You say these images of decaying contemporary structures say something about how we thing about building/s....I think it say a lot more about our "throw-away" culture.
