Socorro County, New Mexico 2005
For those of you who don't get out much, those are flower stalks of the mullen plant. I've heard it called lamb's ear -- large, soft, velvety leaves -- and I've heard it call miner's candle -- very bright yellow flowers at the tip of the flower stalk. The plant has a pretty wide distribution because I've seen it growing here in New England and just about every other state I've traveled through.

We have several mullen plants growing in our garden and they are everywhere along the roads here. Kim refers to them by their Latin name --- Verbascum thapsus. Over the years I have come to really appreciate them. There was even one coming up through a crack in the driveway last year...
